In the present paper, studying the average word length in the English, German, Russian and Bulgarian languages, besides the traditional comparison of the mean number of syllables, the ratio of the notional and functional length of words is compared along with the information they convey. Consequently, decisive is not only the number of the short and the long words in a given pair of languages, but the average word length, the semantic content they carry and the total number of syllables in the given text. All that leads to certain principles applicable in translation from a more verbose language with shorter words into one with longer words, or vice-versa.</style>
</record><record><source-app name="Biblio" version="7.x">Drupal-Biblio</source-app><ref-type>17</ref-type><contributors><authors><author><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Влахов, Сергей,</style></author><author><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Флорин, Сидер</style></author></authors></contributors><titles><title><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Непреводимото в превода: звукоподражания и междуметия</style></title><secondary-title><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Съпоставително езикознание / Сопоставительное языкознание / Contrastive linguistics</style></secondary-title></titles><dates><year><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">1978</style></year></dates><volume><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">3</style></volume><pages><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">56–61</style></pages><language><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">eng</style></language>
<style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">The present work treats onomatopoeias and interjections and their translation, substitution or transcription in literary translations. The authors divide the onomatopoeias into natural, animal and mechanical on one hand, and into conventional and individual on the other; the interjections are divided into conventional for all the carriers of a particular language and individual (characterizing a particular character, or author’s neologisms). In both cases only onomatopoeias and interjections proper are taken into consideration and not nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc., derived from them.</style>
</record></records></xml>
