The temporal and modal meaning of the English verb structure is explicated in an independent word which can be used successfully as a common ground for a contrastive study of prosody as a functional sentence perspective marker. The highly functional prosody of the English analytical verb structure is found to correspond to two Bulgarian prosodic patterns which conform to the Bulgarian norms of accentuation. This falls into line with the role of intonation in the two contrasted languages. %B Съпоставително езикознание / Сопоставительное языкознание / Contrastive linguistics %V 11 %P 25–30 %G eng %0 Journal Article %J Съпоставително езикознание / Сопоставительное языкознание / Contrastive linguistics %D 1984 %T Функционална изреченска перспектива и интонация при съобщителните изречения в английския и българския език %A Сеизова, Теменужка %X The paper discusses the results of an auditive experiment conducted with native speakers of English and Bulgarian. The purpose of the experiment was to compare English and Bulgarian monosyntagmatic utterances in terms of the theory of functional sentence perspective. Emphasis was laid on intonation as a basic means of expressing functional sentence perspective. Declarative statements and negative sentences with various semantic structures were analysed. It was proved once again that intonation plays a highly significant role in expressing functional sentence perspective in English. Intonation has similar functions in Bulgarian and is often combined with word order. %B Съпоставително езикознание / Сопоставительное языкознание / Contrastive linguistics %V 9 %P 30–39 %G eng
