TY - JOUR T1 - Някои проблеми на изследването на глаголната система на балканския езиков съюз JF - Съпоставително езикознание / Сопоставительное языкознание / Contrastive linguistics Y1 - 2002 A1 - Петя Асенова AB - The article deals with the paradigmatics and syntagmatics of verbal categories in the Balkan languages. The verbal Balkanisms that might be represented cartographically are pointed out (future tense forms, the ratio between aorist and imperfect and the habeo and sum perfect forms, the spread of the infinitive and its substitute constructions, the Balkan-type conditional). The Bulgarian non-evidential forms and the Albanian admirative should be given due attention, together with aspect and voice. As to syntagmatics, the functions of the conjunctive, the nonimperative functions of the imperative, the functions of the category of person and the compatibility of verbal forms with definiteness of nouns should also be considered. The obsolescence of the phenomenon is considered as well as possible foreign influence on it. Its similarities and differences in particular Balkan languages are pointed out. A conclusion is made that the phenomenon discussed has different frequency in the different Balkan languages (higher in Albanian and Modern Greek in comparison with Bulgarian and Romanian) which is indicative of its polygenesis. The first part of the paper discusses some basic rules for the formation of lexicons in similar social dialect types. These are lexical borrowing from neighbouring languages, metaphoric and pejorative usage, independent word-formation, semantic calques, etc. The second part of the paper presents an etymological analysis of the lexicon of the secret jargon under discussion. Some existing etymologies have been expanded and/or corrected and some new ones have been proposed. Bulgarian possesses a complete set of Balkanisms, whereas a certain number of them are missing in the other Balkan languages; 2. The Balkanisms, with their uneven territorial distribution, are consistently present in Bulgarian in all its dialects and are manifested in a highly developed and firmly established form, including those which exist in the other Balkan languages as trends only. Bulgarian is thus defined as a Balkan language-standard which unites relevant specific features of the Balkan linguistic union.
